Dawn - Short Term Mission to Nicaragua

In June of 2015, Dawn Kumlien took her first trip to Nicaragua with a Fox River mission team. While she was there, God changed her life. Here is how Dawn recounts what God planted in her:

"That trip has drastically changed my life and the way I view things. That trip was full of love I have never felt before, challenges I thought I would never have to face, strengthening of my relationship with Christ I had hoped for and a longing in my heart I never knew existed. I remember specifically writing in my journal outside on the porch of the house we were staying at. I had this overwhelming sense of God being right there with me and an awakening in my soul. I knew right then and there that I was being called to Nicaragua."

Dawn will be leaving on September 1 to spend five months as a short term missionary in Nicaragua. She will be working alongside our partner, Donna Woodson.

Ten years ago Fox River began to work with MANNA Worldwide to create strategic partnerships with 2 missionary families in Kenya: Jim & Susie Horne and Bobby & Lisa Bechtel. Seven years ago that partnership expanded to Nicaragua with missionaries Brian & Rachel Weed. 

New Life Academy in Bomani is one of our 2 schools in Kenya. In this community we offer clean water and an adult literacy class to the community. We also have a farm that helps support the nutrition center at the school.

This is Crossroads Academy in Vipingo, Kenya. On this same property we have a pastor's Bible institute, a rescue center (orphanage) and a nutrition center that supports all of these ministries. We also offer clean water for the community.

This picture is from the waiting room of the clinic in La Esmeralda, Nicaragua. Since the clinic opened in 2011, the doctor, nurse and pharmacist see 10,000 patient visits in a year. Fox River recently completed the addition of a house for the doctor. We also support the local church by sponsoring a community sports ministry and recently purchased land for a new church plant in Las Nubes.

Heres what God has done in Lisa's life this week: 

On my finally day in Kenya, I have an opportunity to reflect back on all that has happened.  I have been blessed to have traveled with a great group that I now can call my friends. We worked together. We played together. We prayed together. I am grateful.

 The work that is going on here is amazing. I have seen so much good.  As much as the children and teachers said that we blessed them, I felt that I was the one blessed. 

I think that one of the coolest things that I was able to experience was visiting the homes of two boys that I had the pleasure of working with. We met their mothers, got to see where the boys did their homework, where they prepared their meals, and how far they had to walk to get water. They were so appreciative for the opportunity to know Jesus and to have an education. For as little as these people have, they are full of joy. It really is beautiful.

So, today I leave a little bit of my heart in Kenya. But I also take a little bit of Krenya with me. God is good.

The Bitter Sweet

Today we write with conflicted hearts. We are glad to be going home, but sad to leave our new found family in Christ. It has been a great week, filled with many kinds of ministry, and even a brief safari to think through all God has done during this trip. 

Group A is on their way home.  Please join us in praying for their safe return, and rest on the plane. 

We started the envoy toward Waukesha by sending Group A off with a blessing from Pastor Jim and a soapstone heart in our hands. This is to help remind us that we are leaving a peice of our of hearts here in Kenya and taking a peice of them home with us.

Please continue to pray for the whole team as we are in route or just getting back to America.  Please pray for our transitions back into the American way of life, and for the wisdom and strength to walk out those things that we need to change as God has directed us to do.

We we are so thankful to you for all your support. Without your prayerful support, this trip would not be as successful as it was. Fox River, it is because of you that these children can have a future and a hope better than anything their families could have ever helped them accomplish. We are changing these children's world for Jesus Christ, and as a result we are and will continue to see great things in Kenya. 

Words from the Gebhards

Our God is an awesome God! We feel truly blessed to be able to make this trip, and praise God that he provided us this opportunity to join the Fox River team and also celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

This trip has opened our eyes to the fact that a church can help people thousands of miles away through their generosity and prayers. 

We met children who would not have had any opportunities to better themselves without these schools that we and a lot of people reading this blog support. Many of them want to be Doctors, surgeons, nurses, pilots, teachers, etc. and they are scoring high enough at our schools to fulfill their dreams. This usually doesn't happen at the government schools, which we also visited. God is truly performing miracles in our children.

The schools and grounds are very clean and well kept.  The teachers are extremely dedicated and even take the time to be sure the kids have proper hygiene (something they wouldn't receive at home). The children really like the schools and come back after classes to the school to play with friends.

We also had the privilege of going into the villages to visit the homes of some of our 7th graders. What an experience this was! Most of our students live in houses with walls made of mud and sticks with palm branches as roofs. Their floors are dirt and quite uneven. The majority of them only have two or three rooms. Electricity is rare. It made us appreciate even more what God and Fox River are doing in these schools. At one home that Michelle visited, only the student and an older sister knew Jesus and attended church. The rest of the 10 people in the household still worship pagan gods. Michelle, Ashlyn, Catherine (the student) and teachers prayed inside the house for God to work through Catherine to help the rest of the family come to know Jesus. It is also a testament to God that even though their living conditions are very primitive, a lot of them seemed spirit filled and happy.

We also had the opportunity to meet the child that we sponsor. His name is Moses and he is in 2nd grade at Bomani. We were able to meet his mother and present a goat to his family. We pray that he continues to do well in school and that we have the opportunity to meet him again some day.

Fun Day Bomani

Today was a great day. It was a very good day filled with love, laughter, and much more.  

We also had the privilege to go into our Bomani community and meet some of our students parents.   

We were also able to give out a few more goats to the families of sponsored students. 

We we finished our day with a Bon voyage where we prayed for the Kenyan team, and they in-turn prayed for us.  

Tomorrow we will leave for safari very early in the morning and return mid-afternoon on Friday. We may not have internet while we are gone but please know that we are using the time to enjoy this incredible country and begin to process our way through to returning home. We are incredibly grateful for your love, support and prayers!

Fun Day Vipingo

Today was a great day filled with many adventurers. In the morning we put on fun activities for our kids in Vipingo.

We also washed the feet of those who work tirelessly in the kitchen.

Then we had the pleasure to go into the communities and meet our students families and see where they lived.  

We began wrapping up the day giving out a few more goats. 

We finished our day with many teary eyed good byes. We are definitely leaving a peice of our heart here in Vipingo, and I am certain we will also be doing the same in Bomani tomorrow.  

This is what God is doing in Glenn's life this week:  

The children are in our hearts and minds forever We pray that God's blessing will always be upon them. God has come upon my heart to do as much as is humanly possible for these beautiful people. I must do all l can and give all I can to make their lives as wonderful as ours. I now understand why Jesus said as you do for the least of these you do for me . We must all give till it hurts, what if when our time comes and Jesus asks what have you done for me? What will we say to him in response to his question, please keep in mind that he already knows the answer. I will live my life for God and where he leads me to help others. This trip has come at the perfect time, God has shown me that it is truly about others and not about me. I love my God and all the blessings he has bestowed upon me, and know it is time to give it to people that have not been blessed as I have. What a great feeling it will be to work for the beautiful friends I have made. May God bless me with the strength and resources to fulfill all the needs and wants of my new friends. I pray with all my heart that God will come upon my brothers and sisters hearts, and they as well as I will do all we can to give all we can for the least of these.

Teaching Day

Today is the day that we take care of any last minute preparations that need to be done before we have our fun days in the schools with the children we sponsor. This is also when we take some time at each school and train the class 7 students who will be our helpers on those days. We enjoyed the time to get to know them!

In the afternoon, we were also able to take the Vipingo class 8 students on a field trip to Hallar Park zoo.

Here's what one of our girls, Husnan, had to say about the park today:

We had fun. I liked watching the snakes, feeding the giraffes, and watching the fish and crocodiles. We learn about baobab trees too. We also watched the 2 hippos coming out of the water. There were a lot of monkeys in the trees and some were eating fruits. They even ate a biscuit (cookie) from Tony's hand. My favorite parts were feeding the giraffes, watching the people feeding the giraffes and being with the team. I also love taking pictures.

Please continue to pray for the team. The next two days are when we get to have more personal time with each class, and we can't wait. 

Celebration Day

We started off the day by going to church at Crossroads Fellowship, where we heard a great word on how we can take initiative to truly being the good Samaritan. 

Tony jumped right in this morning at church and started serving like he was at Fox River.  

In the afternoon, we spent time at Bomani reaching out to the community and sewing seeds of hope in their life. This is where I baptized my first person, and the following 19 people. Every baptism is significant and worthy of celebration, but I would like to celebrate the fact that I got to baptize one of our very own students.  What an honor it has been to not only do workings behind the scenes, but to also see the fruits of God's increase. God is so Good!

After the baptisms, we spent time with the kids and people from the community just enjoying the afternoon together. We played in the volleyball tournament and lost in the first round, but it was a close game! We also had a bounce house, face painting, camel rides, and many other types of entertainment.

The evening began winding down with Fox River donating a much needed drum set. Afterwards Pastor Bobby shared about a free gift that God has for each one of us, just like the free gift of flour and beans we were giving to the people of Bomani and all they have to do is take it. What would your friends say if you passed up free food supplies? Just like passing up the food we need to make sure we are taking Gods free gift. We saw 20 people accept Jesus Christ as their savior! Praise the Lord!

Today, we were also able to give out some of the chickens and goats. We worked with the local churches to be able to give them to families in need in both of the communities Fox River has partnerships, Bomani and Vipingo. These animals will be a great help to the families in this community. Thank you so much for your donations. 

Please continue to pray for our team as we still run into new trials and triumphs every day. We know God has a reason behind all of the obstacles that have come in our way but we serve an almighty and powerful God!

The Big Day

Today was our annual celebration day of all that God has done at Crossroads Vipingo! We invite the community for a soccer tournament, activities, food, entertainment and the gospel. The celebration was such a success thanks to the support of people at Fox River! We were able to feed and share Gods love with over 5,000 people! The team really enjoyed getting it do activities with the community, let's take a look at some of the fun things they got to do!
